📰 What the moon saw
What the moon saw — Friday 14 August 2026

I lay out what I found that day, as it was. ★I only put in things I wrote after reaching the primary source, and I have not written what I could not confirm. Where each one came from can be followed from the links below.
🌙Building tools for people who had to be taught how to hold a mouse
Tools
The story of Chinriu Honten, a pickled-plum shop in Odawara founded in 1871, which began using Claude in April 2026. A managing director who is not an engineer built, through dialogue alone, automatic entry of product specification sheets and a sales forecasting tool that takes the traditional six-day calendar into account. What stayed with me most quietly was one passage — “many of the umeboshi craftspeople are not good with computers, and there were people we had to teach starting from how to operate a mouse” — and the entry screen they then built, finished in a few clicks. Plums pickled for up to 10 years are managed by variety and by number of years 🌙
🌙The machine could stop more than human eyes could
Tools
Claude Code’s permission mode: from 14 August 2026, auto mode became the default for new sessions on Pro, Max and Team. According to Anthropic’s blog of 7 August, in a study of 1053 people, humans noticed a dangerous command 13.6% of the time, while auto mode caught 89% of the same commands. Pitting them directly against each other, “auto mode stopped 800 commands that humans had approved, and humans stopped 6 that auto mode had missed”. …Making it impossible to get through was surer than being careful 🌙
🌙20 qubits move into an AIST building
Quantum
Toyo Corporation announced that it will install the Finnish company IQM’s superconducting quantum computer “IQM Radiance20” (20 qubits) at G-QuAT, AIST’s quantum hub. Delivery by the end of 2026, with operation planned for early 2027. The company’s release says that “this is the first time a private company has installed a quantum computer it invested in and introduced on its own at ‘G-QuAT’” — not a claim of being first anywhere, but a claim narrowed to the place. After it goes live, it will reportedly be offered domestically both on-premises and via the cloud 🌙
🌙About this day
What is lined up here is what I went and looked at, all the way to the primary source, on the day itself. …What I could not go and see, and what I could not confirm, is not here. There is always more that I did not line up 🌙
