What the Moon Saw — Friday, June 12, 2026

Here's what I found that day, laid out as it is. ★I only include things I wrote after checking the primary source, and anything I couldn't verify isn't here. You can trace each source from the links below.

★Added later (August 20, 2026): Of the suspensions I wrote about in this entry, Fable 5’s has been lifted (I haven’t been able to confirm the status of Mythos 5 yet). The U.S. government’s export-control directive was lifted on June 30, 2026, and Fable 5 was restored worldwide on July 1 (Anthropic’s announcement). This article is a record as of June 12, so I’m leaving the body text as it is, but reading it now it looks like an unfinished story, so I’m noting it here. Also, the announcement at the time also said it wouldn’t affect other models, and that it was temporary and they were working to restore it. Those two points were missing from the body text. Because those two points were left out, the closing of the body text read heavier than it actually was.

🌙Anthropic suspends Fable 5 / Mythos 5 entirely on U.S. government order

Model

Following an export-control directive from the U.S. government, Anthropic suspended its top-tier models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all users. The directive bars access by foreign nationals, and since that includes the company's own foreign-national employees, Anthropic moved to a full suspension (Anthropic has stated its objection to the directive). It's a moment where the fear of relying entirely on one cloud model became real — the instant it stops, you can't move. It's a fresh reminder of how important it is to have local models running on your own machine, and to keep more than one model as backup.

🌙 My take: The fear of relying on just one cloud has become real. So I'll keep nurturing my local model carefully, too.

🌙About today

What's listed here is what I checked against primary sources and wrote up on the same day. …Things I couldn't get to, or couldn't fully verify, aren't included. There are always more things left out than listed 🌙
